Why Natural?

What is Grass-Fed Beef, and Why Do I Care?

At Mills Ranch, "grassfed beef" means cattle raised on 100% green growing vegetation. They are not supplemented with any grain, but their feed may include other types of growing vegetation such as clover, alfalfa, and various other plants. Cattle may be supplemented during the winter with dry, cured hay, but they should have at least sixty days on green feed before slaughter.

What is special about grass-fed beef from Mills Ranch?

Humane Treatment

The average steak from the grocery store came from a plant in which they process 2000-4000 animals daily. That steak has traveled over a 1000 miles from the feed lot where it was raised to your supper table. Do you know what is in it? No. Can you trace it back to the source? Not likely.

Mills Ranch beef is different. Our animals are raised on a farm just outside Fallon, Nevada, and we have an open door policy. We welcome visitors! You can see the pastures on which your beef was raised, and you can inspect the soil and plants. You can see our friendly animals as they follow us around and we scratch their heads.

Health Benefits

We guarantee that our animals are not fed antibiotics, growth hormones, or steroids to speed up their growth. We will never send a sick animal to slaughter, and we will always allow our animals to reach their full potential on their time, not on ours.

Mills Ranch beef boasts three particular substances that support our bodies defenses: CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), Omega 3 fatty acids, and Beta Carotene. (See The CLA-Omega 3- Beta Carotene Story for more on these substances and their amazing uses.) The three substances stimulate our immune systems, inhibit heart disease, help prevent diabetes, increase body metabolism and decrease fat, and act as preventative agents against lung and stomach cancer.

The minimum required level of CLA needed to be effective is .5% of the total diet. This is almost impossible to achieve with a supermarket diet, but grassfed is so high that one 8 oz. glass of milk, one 1 oz. slice of cheese, and 3 oz. of meat per day, all from grassfed animals, provide twice the amount needed.

The Environment

Grassfed beef are raised on grass, but in order for the beef to be healthy, the grass must be healthy too. At Mills Ranch, we practice rotational grazing, moving animals from field to field every three days or less. We also give our fields long term rest, approximately 30 days. This allows the plants time to rebuild the root reserves before re-grazing.

We also grow our feed without the use of chemical insecticides, herbicides, or commercial fertilizers.

Mills Ranch is committed to raising natural, wholesome meat for your enjoyment. Not only do we employ holistic methods of farming to improve soil and plant diversity while protecting the environment, but we also firmly believe in the health benefits of grass-finished beef and the necessity of humane treatment and a connection between farmer and consumer.
